Turn Back the Clock with a Beautiful Facelift
Facelift Surgery is the Gold standard for treating structural changes associated with the aging face. All other therapies invasive and non-invasive must be measured against a surgical face-lift for their ability to reverse the signs of aging to a more youthful appearance. The goal of a facelift is to restore the volume and contours of the midface, jawline, and neck by elevating the deeper structures called the SMAS.The upward tension is not on the skin but on the deeper layers.By using the SMAS instead of the skin as a fulcrum to raise your sagging tissue no distortion in your smile or eyelid contours will occur. This gives a natural appearing result that will not look like you were in a wind-tunnel. Natural result is not to pull on the skin (the deeper structure called the SMAS is elevated) and not to distort the outer mouth or the outer eye (called the canthus). there should be no hair loss or change to your hairline. In addition, the recovery of about 10 days is about half as long as most facelift recoveries.
Q: Is there a “Mismatch” between how you feel and how you look?
A: Looking brighter and more vibrant will help you to project greater confidence, energy, and well-being which can have positive effects on your personal and professional life. Many patients have often already explored many other surgical and non- surgical options. Sometimes patients recognize the limitations of non- invasive procedures such as “thread lifts” which may have not met their expectations. Often these patients are seeking a more “long-term” solution and facelift surgery is then a consideration. Patients then consult Doctor Kopelman to explore whether a facelift is the right solution to rejuvenate their neck and face.He will also review your medical history and determine if you are a good candidate for facelift surgery.
Q: What causes the change in the overall shape of my face?
A: As we age all the soft tissues and bone of our face undergo change. Fat that descends below the jawline produces “jowls” that changes the overall contour of your face from an oval shape into a more rectangular contour. Most people who perceive this change in shape associate it with age-related facial sagging. The neck muscles and fat also sag which can dramatically change your profile.
Q: What is the objective of having a facelift?
A: The ultimate goal of your face lift surgery is to “turn back the clock” by tightening and lifting the skin and muscle of the neck and mid-facial soft tissue to redistribute skin and muscle and recreate lost facial volume. At the time of the initial consultation Doctor Kopelman will provide a precise assessment of your facial features. This will allow him to outline a detailed plan to restore balanced and harmonious facial features. If you decide that a facelift is the right option for you you can be sure that Doctor Kopelman’s artistic eye, skilled hands and attention to detail will leave you looking years younger without obvious signs that you underwent a facelift procedure. Doctor Kopelman will individualize his face lifting techniques to match your unique features and lifestyle. One facelift technique cannot be applied to all patients.
Q: Are all facelift procedures in men and women the same?
A: In fact,Dr. Kopelman modifies his surgical technique to address structural differences in men and women. The incisions in both men and women should follow the natural curves of the skin in front of the ear. The incision in women is always hidden posterior to the tragus while in men the incision may be in front of the ear or hidden behind the tragus. The decision to modify the incision in men is predicated on whether the skin texture does not match the skin texture of the ear, presence of wrinkles in front of the ear and the thickness of the beard which may be transposed over the tragus.
Q: Are there different facelift procedures?
A: Doctor Kopelman has mastered many different face lifting techniques( composite facelifts, extended SMAS lifts, short incision mini-lifts) that allow him to be versatile in addressing different degrees of facial aging. Therefore, Doctor Kopelman will choose the facelift technique that is ideal for your particular problems. He also selectively recommends additional procedures such as cosmetic eyelid surgery, laser skin resurfacing, endoscopic brow lifting, chin augmentation, facial volume augmentation with fat grafting or hyaluronic acid gels and other procedures in order to restore volume loss and recreate facial balance and harmony with other areas of your face. You will not have a stretched or wind blown appearance. Instead you will appear younger, more vibrant, and rested. Before undergoing the procedure, Doctor Kopelman will review your medical history to determine if you are a good candidate for facelift surgery.
Q: Is a facelifting procedure painful?
A: No, this outpatient procedure is comfortably performed under intravenous anesthesia in a “twilight sleep”. Our board certified anesthesiologist will closely monitor and safely titrate the anesthetic so that you will feel no pain and you will probably not even remember going to sleep. No breathing tube is necessary and you can be awakened in minutes after the anesthetic is turned off. Very few patients experience nausea or discomfort following the procedure.
Q: How long does it take to heal following a facelift?
A: We understand that you my have a busy social calendar and professional schedule therefore we will do everything to speed your recovery including prescribing homeopathic medicines that may accelerate the resolution of swelling. Your incisions will be healed within one week following surgery. Sutures will be removed in the office within 5 to 7 days. Walking at a moderate pace is acceptable and encouraged following surgery but we recommend that you refrain from intense exercise and heavy lifting for at least two weeks following your procedure. If you have persistent bruising our staff will provide camouflage make-up for you as needed. You will be able to resume your normal social calendar after approximately two weeks. Realistically, most people will remain swollen for at least one to two weeks, therefore we recommend that you should not arrange social appointments during this recovery period. Complete dissipation of swelling may take several months.
Q: Can I also combine a facelift with other complimentary cosmetic procedures?
A: Yes, depending upon your cosmetic concerns, Doctor Kopelman may recommend other cosmetic procedures such as cosmetic eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), fat grafting, endoscopic brow lifts, and laser skin rejuvenation to enhance the overall appearance of your face.
