A: A small chin may sometimes give a false impression that the patient has a large over–projected nose when in fact the person may have a recessed small chin.Chin implants are a permanent solution that will help to restore facial balance and harmony in people with receding chins relative to other facial features
Q: Is chin augmentation a stand-alone procedure or are other procedures recommended at the same time?
A: Chin augmentation can be a stand-alone procedure or scheduled in conjunction with another surgery such as a nose shaping procedure, liposuction of the neck and jawline, and /or facelift procedure.
Q:What can I expect at the time of my consultation for a chin augmentation?
A: Dr. Kopelman will photograph and measure the chin/ jawline and will select the ideal size implant that will harmoniously balance your profile and frontal dimensions. If a patient is not yet ready for chin augmentation surgery then Dr. Kopelman may recommend the temporary use of an injectable filler in the chin. Hyaluronic acid gels like JuvedermXC® or Restylane Lyft® are safe and natural, non-surgical alternatives to chin implant surgery. These temporary injections can give a patient a realistic vision of what a more balanced facial profile may look like. This temporary measure can give a patient time to determine if they like the change in their profile before committing to a permanent surgical procedure.
Q: How is a chin augmentation performed?
A: Chin augmentation is performed under monitored “twilight” anesthesia. Doctor Kopelman typically marks the crease found beneath the chin and injects a numbing agent like lidocaine . You will be completely comfortable and safe. An incision is made slightly behind the crease. Through this incision Dr .Kopelman creates a pocket along the jawline . A custom sized silicone implant is then inserted and secured below the muscle. The pocket is closed in layers to allow the implant to remain symmetrically in place.Chin augmentation is performed on an outpatient basis and is usually completed in around one hour.
Q:What can I expect following chin augmentation?
A: Following surgery the chin is taped to hold the implant in place for a few days until the swelling subsides. You will be placed on prophylactic oral antibiotics as a cautionary step to prevent infections. Most patients can resume their normal activities within two to three days but strenuous exercise should avoided for approximately 14 days. After two days the external tape is removed in the office after which you will apply topical ointment to the incision. The incisional scar fades in most cases over a few months and is not usually noticeable.
Q: What are the risks associated with chin augmentation surgery?
A: Problems rarely occur, but include: infections, implant displacement and extrusion. These events are very rare but should the implant become displaced the implant can be repositioned in most cases without untoward secondary effects. Other less likely complications may also occur but can be discussed with Dr. Kopelman prior to the procedure.
